What is in store for the future of international trade? Today’s world is, in many ways, vastly different than the one in which the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) was negotiated a few years ago or when the World Trade Organization (WTO) was founded more than a quarter century ago. None of the three largest players, the United States, China, and the European Union, see the world of commerce in the same way as they once did. Geopolitics and domestic concerns have intervened.
On top of this, the challenges of sweeping technological breakthroughs, as well as dealing with climate change and future global health risks, will shape the policies of each nation.
•How will the US–China rivalry affect world trade? Will there be trading blocs? How should the global trading system administered by the WTO adapt?
•What should become of the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership, the free-trade agreement among the remaining 11 TPP countries minus the United States? What role can and should Japan play?
•How can the US business community help shape policies that will impact their trade and investment and affect the future of the multilateral trading system?
These questions and those raised by ACCJ members will be featured in this hybrid in-person and virtual discussion.
About the Speaker
Ambassador Alan Wm. Wolff is a distinguished visiting fellow at the Peterson Institute for International Economics (PIIE). His research focuses on developing reforms of the World Trade Organization (WTO); responding to the role of the United States, the European Union, and China in the international trading system; and serving the needs of all countries in using trade to achieve economic prosperity. Before joining PIIE, he was deputy director-general of the WTO. His new book, Revitalizing the World Trading System, will be published this month by Cambridge University Press.
Prior to serving as a WTO deputy director-general, Ambassador Wolff had a long career as one of the world’s leading international trade lawyers. He has represented, for example, the US semiconductor industry in its work with governments and authorities of Japan, South Korea, China, Taiwan, the European Union, and the United States. For the six years prior to joining the WTO, he served as the chairman of the National Foreign Trade Council, the century-old US pro-trade organization.
